Alghero... Sardinian, Italian, Catalan... and Wonderful....

As you travel to these far away places, you imagine if you could live there.  Alghero, Sardinia was a place we felt we could live.  It's a clean and progressive city on the Mediterranean Sea with a large and charming Old Town, a vibrant commercial district, a great waterfront and harbor, and an international vibe.  It has excellent restaurants and lots of outdoor cafes.  There is a noticeable Spanish and Catalan influence in the food, music, and culture.  Here are views of the harbor and the ramparts around the old town....

Our drive along the coast road from Bosa to Alghero was spectacular.  Yellow flowers were bursting forth, and every turn yielded another photo opportunity....

We stayed in Alghero for three nights at Hotel Angedras (Sardegna backwards).  It was clean, comfortable, and convenient.  The staff was very friendly and helpful.  Everything worked, and parking was right out front.

From the hotel, it was about a fifteen minute walk to the Old Town.  Some of the many interesting things we saw....

Cool benches, in a mini park....

Great sign on the bicycle....
Cannons, for defense no longer necessary...

Great old anchor....

Creating store displays with pieces of scrap wood....

Alghero honors its over 100-year-old citizens with plaques.  Giuseppe is 102, and in the Nuraghe....

A trebuchet, very much no longer needed, but a sneaky hang-out for local teens....

Take a book, leave a book....

Easter tradition, eggs baked in fancy bread....

Beautiful dome....

Chris and Joe, a selfie in the harbor....

For lunch, what better place than the historic Bar Milese, with outside seating at the harbor.  And yes, a fantastic focaccia sandwich is only 2.50 euros....

We noticed all of the street lights were covered in red, for Easter processions after dark....

We saw the tail end of a procession that night....

Less than ten minutes walk from the hotel was Trattoria La Saletta, a restaurant featuring typical Sardinian cooking.  The meat, potato, and vegetable orders are served in a cork bowl....

A great way to end the first full day in Alghero....
