Charming Cefalu'

We spent four lovely days in Cefalu', an ancient seaside village on the north coast of Sicily, nestled between a giant rock and the sea.  It has narrow cobbled streets, a 12th century Norman Cathedral, excellent restaurants, and lots of charm.

The 12th century Norman Cathedral is at the base of the rock,  but stands tall and imposing over Cefalu'...

The apse is decorated completely in mosaics, the work began in the 1100's!
Cefalu' has a 15th century medieval laundry facility, thanks to a fresh-water river that runs under the village, from the mountain to the sea...

Some street scenes...

Fruits and vegetables, right to your door...

A medieval window to the sea...

Beautiful church facade...

You could write a book on the variety of ancient door knockers...
Quaint narrow cobbled streets...

Our B&B was very comfortable, just one block from the beach, and a five minute walk into the old town.  Our room had a view of a tropical garden, where breakfasts are served in the warmer months...

The breakfasts were served by 86-year-old Irma, the mother of the owner.  She loves to bake, and there were tasty choices every day.  Here is the breakfast spread, after four of us had helped ourselves...

One day we took a drive through the mountains, which begin just minutes south of Cefalu'.  The scenery is spectacular, beyond words, and these photos do not do it justice....

Where to next....
